Major fire at Bicholim industrial estate

Billowing smoke heralded a major fire at the Bicholim industrial estate on Sunday. 4 fire tenders from as far as Valpoi and Mapusa besides local tenders from Bicholim were pressed into service to control the fire after waste fibre dumped outside a factory.

  On Sunday waste fiber caught fire. Fire department officials said that they got a call at around 2.45 in the evening that there was a fire in the industrial estate.

Locals allege that the fire was a result of the negligence of factories in the area who have been dumping waste there for the past 3 years.

They allege that complaints have been made and no action has been taken even as fire officials point out that smoke from fibre is harmful to health.
