Goan Visvon cheaper in Singapore than in Madgao

Goan Visvonn is sold at a cheaper rate in Singapore, but costs a bomb in Madgao.

This allegation was thrown at the Fisheries minister in the Assembly on Tuesday by a member of the ruling BJP itself.Ironically, the minister expressed his helplessness in doing anything about this.

Fisheries Minister Vinod Palayekar had made tall claims of providing fish at cheaper rate when he took over last year.

And this year, when BJP MLA Nilesh Cabral pointed out that King Fish from Cutbon jetty is exported to Singapore at a cheaper rate than the local market, Palayekar said: this is not in my hands. The fishing industry in the state is subsidized to quite an extent including the cost of trawlers and even diesel.

However, Goans pay a huge price for fish, a staple in local diets. A lot of fish is exported and quite a lot goes to hotels too. Locals get the remaining.

The Curchorem MLA also accused the fisheries minister of allowing a society that did not have a license to operate from the Cutbon jetty. The minister promised to rectify the issue.
