Ammonia gas leakage on Airport road in Vasco as tanker overturns

Ammonia gas leakage has struck Vasco city, on the Airport – Chicalim road early morning on Friday.



No casualties were reported though two  old women from a flat had to be hospitalised.

A tanker carrying Ammonia gas and proceeding towards Zuari Industries at Zuarinagar fell into a roadside ditch and overturned near SAG ground at around 2.45 am.

As gas started leaking from the tanker and people around the area living in colonies started getting suffocated, Fire Brigade and police were alerted.

People were immediately told to vacate their houses by putting a wet cloth on their mouth as a precautionary measure.

Authorities including Mamlatdar Satish Prabhu rushed to the spot to take charge of the situation.

Fire tenders of Goa Fire Brigade, MPT as well as Zuari were pressed into operation and the whole area was sprayed with water in order to prevent spread of ammonia gas.

Two old women living in a flat were rescued and hospitalised as they could not move out of a flat.

The police have blocked the entire road from Chicalim junction to the airport.

Authorities have also sought the help of Navy.

The situation had come fully under control by 5.30 am.

No flight movement at the  airport was affected.
