‘Rashtramat’ hits newspaper stands, surprises Madgaonkars

Madgaonkars were pleasantly shocked on 25th November. In the morning, they saw a copy of Rashramat along with other newspapers. After almost 13 years.

That too in colour. Literally everybody jumped.

Oh no, the newspaper has actually started again? It was a tribute to its long-time Editor late Chandrakant Keni, whose 83rd birth anniversary was celebrated on Saturday.

Rashtramat was not a mere newspaper. It was started on 1st September 1964 to save Goa from merging into Maharashtra.

It led the movement and was instrumental in winning the historic Opinion Poll held on 16th January 1967. Even after that the newspaper continued its work to preserve Goan identity.

Veteran journalist and writer Chandrakant Keni led it, fighting all the obstacles the newspaper faced politically as well as financially. Finally, it was closed on 31st August 2004.
