SC makes HC-ordered ‘general’ wards ‘reserved’ again

Goa’s 15 wards of 10 panchayats have become reserved wards once again. Because the Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed the high court order.

The high court had de-reserved them and made them general wards.

The State Election Commission however is yet to issue a fresh order in this regard. They were waiting for the court order till late night on Tuesday.

The High Court of Bombay at Goa last Wednesday had stayed the reservation notification after hearing the petitions filed by residents of Curca Bambolim, Betalbatim, Sancoale, Betki Khandola, Kurti Khandepar, Penha de Franca, Merces, Anjuna Caisua and Advalpal village panchayats.

They had collectively challenged the delimitation and reservation notification of government for the panchayat polls in the State.

Mauvin said that there would not be much changes and they would meet Wednesday to finalise the details for the panchayat elections to be held on 11 of June
