Goa’s Lamani community has become a matter of controversy once again. And this time Goa Forward minister Vijai Sardesai is involved in it.

The news broke out on the internet that Vijai is planning to ban Lamanis from selling retail fish in the Madgao market. Vijai however later clarified that he is not banning Lamanis but anybody who is selling retail fish in the wholesale market.

TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai inspected the SGPDA market in Madgao on Tuesday based on a complaint made to him by some local retail fish traders that retail sale of fish is going on in the wholesale market.

Incidentally, most of these illegal fish sellers belong to Lamani community.

When his stand of banning Lamanis from selling retail fish broke out on the Internet, he immediately clarified that he is neither racist nor anti-Lamanis, but against the illegality.

Later on, Vijai also clarified on his twitter handle while indirectly apologizing for his comment. He said: Reference to Lamanis was done only after receiving specific complaints that they were doing retail trade in the wholesale market, is regretted!

Vijai also set  a limit for fish cutters  till 8 am and counter sale till 9 am.

Vijai said his aim is to make Margao fish market the best in the entire country.

He further clarified that he is not targeting any particular community  but merely setting things in order.
