Goa Suraksha Manch has replaced Raju Sukerkar in Panaji with a news candidate, physiotherapist Dr Ketan Bhatikar.

Though Sukerkar has been requested to opt out due to health issues, he will campaign for the GSM.

There was a rumour that Sukerkar has been pressurized by defence minister Manohar Parrikar to opt out of the race to get BJP MLA Sidharth Kunkolkar elected. But GSM President Anand Shirodkar said Sukerkar has opted out at their request.

Parrikar has been holding this constituency for five times since 1994. He was replaced with Kunkolkar after he resigned to take over as India’s defence minister. Dr Ketan Bhatikar is confident of ending the BJP’s monopoly over the state capital.
