The Congress party has demanded that the government start importing coal through Mangalore port as it is used in Karnataka.

Congress leader, Sankalp Amonkar at a press conference on Wednesday called upon the union government to give permission to the Mangalore port as the coal presently coming in through the Mormugao Port was being used in Karnataka after transiting through and polluting Goa.

Mormugao Port has been importing coal for some time now. This is being used by companies for their factories based in Karnataka. Now they are asking for enhancement of their berth facilities.

Sankalp also accused one of the companies, O P Jindal group, of having a permission to import 6 million tonnes of coal annually but they were importing double the amount illegalities and polluting the area.

Sankalp spoke about the adverse impact of dredging to increase the depth of water from 14 metres to 19.8 metres.
