The ruling coalition has agreed to declare coconut as a state tree. But environmentalists and even heritage lovers have opposed it.

Because Matti is already declared as the state tree.

Therefore they propose that Maad be declared as a heritage tree, and not a state tree.

Goa’s leading environmentalist Rajendra Kerkar has exposed ignorance of the ruling politicians while observing that Goa government has already declaredMatti as the state tree in 1975.

On other hand, heritage lover PrajalSakhardande feels that some trees and fruits, including coconut, should be declared as heritage trees and fruits.

He is one of the leading activists who had started agitation over saving coconut trees.
