A lot of angst and acrimonious protests were heard at a packed public hearing at Tilak Maidan in Vasco that began on the 26th of April.

The speakers vented their anger against the planned expansion projects for three coal handling berths at the Mormugao Port.

A majority of the attendees vociferously objected to any further expansion egged on by a vocal crowd.

The hearing will continue on the 27th and 28th of April.

There have been a lot of complaints against the pollution caused by coal dust.

The government has been intermittently ordering monitoring of the pollution.

The Goa State Pollution Control Board is conducting the hearing  for the proposal to increase the capacity at berths 5A and 6A by the South West Port.

The hearing on the dredging for the cape- size vessels has been fixed on 27th April and 28th of April will see the hearing on the redevelopment of berths 8 and 9.

Shops and markets remained closed in the port town in solidarity with the opposition against the expansion of the coal handling berths.
