The degree of Master of Performing Art at Shivaji University has become a matter of controversy.

Theatre artist Narayan Kharade has alleged that Director and the Deputy Director of Art and Culture have attained the degree without attending any classes of this regular course.

However Director Prasad Lolayekar and other passed-out students have claimed that the Kolhapur-based University has special provision under Gurukul pattern, where attending classes regularly is not mandatory.

Narayan Kharade had earlier started this controversy on the Facebook. And then on Friday, he had a press briefing.

He does not deny that many students from Goa have attained this degree in the same fashion. But his main objection is only on the Director and the Deputy Director. He calls it immoral.

Lolayekar, as well as other students, have produced Shivaji University documents which state that it has a provision to grant this degree under Gurukul system without attending regular classes.

According to them, 22 Goan students have passed out till date attaining MPA degree. And this year, several students including Goans have taken admission. Out of these, only one student is enrolled for regular classes.

After the controversy started on the Facebook, Director of Art & Culture Prasad Lolayekar says he has moved a note to the government, demanding an independent inquiry into the MPA controversy.
