HC prepones panchayat polls by 12 June

The High Court on Wednesday preponed the date of panchayat elections by five more days.

On or before 12th of June. The government had decided to hold it on 17th June. But the term of all the 185 panchayats ends this month.

Initially the government decided to hold panchayat elections by 25th of June. But since it was clashing with Sao Joao Feast, the government preponed it by eight days and fixed 17th June.

Now, the high court has directed the government to hold the elections on or before 12th of June.

The government had earlier said the whole process of delimitation of wards and reservation procedure was delayed due to the code of conduct of the Assembly election.

The State Election Commission told the court it would require 33 days to complete the process of delimitation and reservations of wards. Based on this, the high court has now fixed 12th June as the deadline.

The petition challenging government decision was filed by Bicholim-based lawyer Rohan Shirodkar.
