Organ transplant facility from brain dead in Goa soon

Health Minister Vishwajit Rane has said that harvesting of organs from a brain dead person will soon become available in Goa with the first patient undergoing the procedure at Manipal hospital in Dona Paula.



The Health Minister has also said that the state government will start modernization of the Goa Medical College and Hospital. 

 According to nephrologist Dr Amol Mahaldar, Goa has the ability to harvest and transplant kidneys. However, for Heart and liver transplants specialist from Mumbai will have to come down till local doctors master the art.  

 Vishwajit told media that he will be revamping the GMC to ensure that it can undertake such highly specialized procedures.

He said that they are in the process of streamlining Mapusa’s  Asilo hospital and Margao’s Hospicio hospital so as to ensure that referrals for minor ailments are handled at their level.

He also said that he would look into the management systems of the GMC including purchases such as medicines and other items.
