Niz Goenkar has threatened to approach a court of law if the state government does not denotify the Nationalisation of Rivers Act passed by the central government.

They have alleged this is done for the benefit of a few corporates.

Niz Goenkara president Sanjay Redkar stated that Goa’s rivers are being used for shipping and navigation for decades.

The nationalization of rivers endangers the livelihood of traditional fishermen and farmers.

He said the fishermen and farmers are dependent on the rivers and the wetlands, khazans and paddy fields.

Niz Goenkar Secretary Chandrashekar Vast said the act gives the central agency the power to acquire, develop and utilize lands adjoining the rivers.

He said this will be detrimental to the khazan farmers and traditional fisher folks.
