Green Goans irked over Mah Govt allocating funds for Virdi dam

Maharashtra state cabinet approving the allocation of 146 crore rupees for construction of canals for the Virdi dam project has caused a lot of heartburn in the Goa.

The heartburn is even more because the construction of the dam has been stopped because the matter is before the tribunal which has ordered a status quo on the project.

The anticipated water shortage in areas bordering the project is a major underlying worry in case the Maharashtra government gets to complete the project.

Sources in the government said the chief minister Manohar Parrikar will speak to his Maharashtra counterpart Devendra Fadnavis on the issue and only then the government will come out with a reaction.

But the Mhadei Bachao Abhiyan has come out strongly against the project criticizing the Maharashtra government for its actions.

The Virdhi dam project began in 2006 but the work was stopped for the last two years after the Goa government had approached the water tribunal.
