Goa has won a major battle of Mhadei diversion issue. Not before the water dispute tribunal, but in the Supreme Court.

Karnataka has assured the apex court that it would not go ahead with the construction of Kalsa-Bandura canal. The canal is built to divert the waters of Mhadei river to Malprabha river.

The case was filed by Mhadei Bachao Abhiyan in 2009.

They had raised an objection over Karnataka building canals in the forest of Western Ghat without taking environment clearance.

The apex court had last week told Centre as well as Karnataka to file affidavits.

The union ministry of Forest and Environment on Thursday told the court that no environmental clearance is given.

And Karnataka assured the court that it won’t go ahead with the construction of Kalsa-Bandura canal project.

Accordingly, the case was disposed.
