60 percent of the land in Ponda is acquired for agriculture

Ponda Taluka has around 2200 hectares of agricultural land.

However, more than 40 per cent of this is kept fallow.

Despite a lot of help from the government, agriculture still does not seem to be an option for most of Goan youth.

According to the farmers, present generation mostly seeks government jobs.

There is a shortage of labour and carrying out agriculture with migrant labour is unaffordable and hence not viable.

Farmers also complain that in many cases the bandharas on rivers and tributaries are breached.

This results in mixing of fresh and saline water.
