35% wards reserved for panchayat polls, including 15 SC wards

The number of reserved wards is finally out for the panchayat elections. Total 15 wards reserved for the scheduled caste for the first time. 168 wards for the scheduled tribes and 357 wards for the Other Backwards Classes.



Total 540 wards reserved out of 1522 wards in 186 panchayats. Approximately 35 per cent reservations.


Panchayat Minister Mauvin Godinho gave a total break-up of the wards reserved for the elections scheduled on 11th June. The scheduled caste wards are reserved only in five talukas out of 12. These are 3 in Pedne, 2 in Bicholi and 1 each in Sattari, Salcete and Bardez.

The election schedule was notified on Monday night by the State Election Commission. As per this schedule, nominations would be accepted from 18th to 25th of May, scrutiny on 26th and 27th May, Withdrawals on 29th May, Elections on 11th June and Counting on 13th June.

Mauvin admits that the whole election process requires further modifications. But he would do it only after the election process is over. Not now.  


 State Election Commissioner R K Srivastava also announced that the legal limit for election spending for a candidate has been increased from twenty five thousand rupees to forty thousand rupees.
